Ozempic / Semaglutide

Ozempic (Semaglutide) 0.25-1mg is indicated for the treatment of adults with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise.
Wegovy is the formulation released for non diabetics to assist with weight loss. It also contains semaglutide but the dose range is 0.5-2.4mg.
Wegovy is FDA (US food and drug administration) approved for weight management in NON diabetics in the USA. We hope to see it available in Australia in 2022, however for selected patients it is possible to use Ozempic ( The same ingredient in Wegovy) , It is a lower dose but appears to be very effective in our weight loss patients combined with our supported diet and behaviour program.
Visit an Elina clinic in North Melbourne, Glen Waverley, Berwick and Bundoora to see if it is suitable for you.
Please note that the use of Ozempic in non-diabetics is “Off Label” use as the medication hasn’t obtained Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration approval as yet for this use. We will provide a detailed review and explanation of the evidence, risks and harms and potential benefits in great detail prior to prescribing.
Please note that we only prescribe weight loss medications as part of a supervised program with regular reviews and only for patients with significant overweight, this will be discussed at the introduction meeting.

WHAT IS THE CURRENT EVIDENCE?
Our programs and education modules were developed in-house based on the current best evidence for weight management developed at Austin Hospital Obesity clinic. We gained inspiration from Prof Joe Proietto (Endocrinologist and Obesity Researcher), Mr Arun Dhir (Bariatric Surgeon), The CSIRO research into low carb diets (2017) and Dr Michael Mosely (intermittent fasting diet)
Our program is based on the principles that
- Will power and motivation will never overcome the body’s defence of its weight.
- We are made, evolved and genetically imprinted to be a specific weight – blaming ourselves for that is pointless and dis-empowering.
- Slow weight loss programs fail as the body is too good at overcoming will power. Losing weight fast and losing weight without hunger is our initial goal.
- Maintaining weight after weight loss is the critical part of our program and preparing for this begins on Day 1 of our program
We recognise the challenges that many patients face when confronted with the seemingly endless cycle of weight loss and regain and are committed to making the latest medical research and evidence accessible and relevant. Our Doctors are all SCOPE trained and are committed to ongoing education, self improvement and holistic care.
